Public Waiting Expansion

Huntsville International Airport
Huntsville, Alabama

A Twenty-Year Master Plan evaluating the growth needs of the Huntsville International Airport was completed in 2004. This master plan indicated that two major issues needed to be addressed: public waiting and security checkpoint space. The design of the Public Waiting Project quadrupled the previous space available for both of these functions. From an aesthetic point of view, the Huntsville International Airport also wanted the renovated facility to be a gateway into the City of Huntsville. The public waiting and security wings include a forty foot high structural glass window wall, allowing passengers prime views onto the tarmac showing full view of the arriving and departing planes. The public waiting space features a full height "Welcome to Huntsville" wall with images reflecting the history of the City. The terrazzo flooring, composite metal wall panels, and solid surface materials were designed to be lower maintenance and convey a clean, contemporary look. The main circulation hall boasts a 6'high x 24'wide high definition display showing current advertising and news network television.

This project also provided major upgrades and renovations to the 40 year old terminal building, including new restrooms, a gift shop, food and beverage facilities, and mechanical system upgrades.
