Blossomwood Elementary School

Year Completed: 2012

Project Location: Huntsville, AL

Project Size: 120,000 Sqft New Construction

Construction Cost: $17,400,000

For over 50 years, the Blossomwood Elementary School was truly a neighborhood school.  Situated on a small suburban site of only 12 acres, the small school building could not keep up with modern demands.  Chapman Sisson Architects was awarded the challenge of designing a replacement school for the same site, which more than doubles the student capacity while at the same time increasing parking, adding a full size gymnasium and providing queuing space for 42 vehicles.  All of these challenges were met in a much larger building, while maintaining the qualities that the tight-knit community loved about the old school.  Given all of the challenges involved, the project was bid on-time and below budget.

The Gymnasium doubles as the Tornado Safe Room. This was one of the first Safe Rooms designed to ICC 500 standards for a school in Alabama. The reinforced walls and specially locking doors make this room a safe haven for students and staff during severe weather.
