On the fringe of a rural setting, Johnson Elementary School is a public school located in Athens, AL serving Pre-Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. The school had a major need for additional classroom space and enhanced vehicular queuing for drop-off and pick-up. There was also a need for interior renovations that were bid as an alternate and ultimately added to the project.

The addition is a single-story addition, approx. 24,000sf, to the existing school, with approximately half of the addition serving as a storm shelter for the entire school. The exterior construction consists of brick, cast stone, and metal sloped roofs to complement the existing school. Color walls and tile portals accent entries on the interior for wayfinding and interest in the single-story double-loaded corridor, both on the existing school and the new addition.
